Many days there are far too many anniversaries, holidays, and observances to post about individually on social media, so in an effort to have more of them available, LLPHP is going to experiment with posting them daily here. - 1845: Macon B. Allen and Robert Morris Jr became the first African Americans to open a law practice in the US
- 1894: The 500-strong Commonwealth of Christ (Coxey’s Army) arrived in Washington, DC to protest against unemployment and Coxey was arrested for trespassing at the Capitol
- 1901: An anti-Semitic riot occurred in Budapest
- 1902: Congress extended the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882 which prohibited immigration of Chinese laborers from territories to the mainland, a rule clearly aimed at Chinese in the Philippines
- 1942: Jews were forced to wear a Jewish Star in the Netherlands and Vichy-France
- 1943: German pastor and anti-Nazi dissident Dietrich Bonhoeffer was arrested by the Gestapo
- 1945: The US Army liberated 31,601 people from the Dachau Nazi concentration camp in Germany
- 1945: Conscientious objector Desmond Doss saved approximately 75 wounded soldiers in the Battle of Okinawa at Hacksaw Ridge, which was later depicted in the Oscar-winning film “Hacksaw Ridge”
- 1946: 28 former Japanese leaders were indicted in Tokyo as war criminals
- 1951: China seized the assets of the Asiatic Petroleum Company, a joint venture between the Shell and Royal Dutch oil companies, in retaliation for the Hong Kong Government’s requisitioning of the tanker Yung Hao
- 1965: Seattle, Washington was hit by an earthquake that killed 5 people
- 1975: Ethiopia nationalized all land
- 1983: Harold Washington was sworn in as Chicago’s first African American mayor
- 1990: Wrecking cranes began tearing down the Berlin Wall at the Brandenburg Gate
- 1991: A devastating cyclone struck Bangladesh’s Chittagong district, killing 139,000 people and leaving 10 million homeless
- 1991: The most powerful earthquake on record to hit the Caucasus region killed 170 people in the Republic of Georgia
- 1992: A jury acquitted Los Angeles Police Department officers on State charges of excessive force in the beating of Rodney King and the decision sparked massive riots that lasted several days
- 1997: The Chemical Weapons Convention of 1993 went into force outlawing the production, stockpiling, and use of specified chemical weapons among its signatories
- 2005: Syria completed its withdrawal from Lebanon, ending 29 years of occupation
- 2005: New Zealand’s first civil union took place
- 2007: The second of the Republic Protests in support of state secularism was held in Istanbul, Turkey
- 2015: Indonesia executed 8 prisoners, including 7 foreigners, for drug offences at Besi Prison on the island of Nusakambangan
- 2017: 3 tornadoes hit south east of Dallas, Texas, killing 5 people
- 2019: Indonesia announced plans to relocate its capital from Jakarta due to the city sinking
- 2019: Over 300 people were declared to have died of overwork in Indonesia’s one-day election on April 17th, with over 2,000 people falling sick
- 2019: Statistics were released that over 700 people were infected with the measles in the US, the highest number in 25 years
- 2020: The official COVID-19 death toll reached 26,000 deaths in the UK as care home and community deaths were included
- 2021: Brazil’s official COVID-19 death toll passed 400,000, with daily fatalities at 3,000, down from 4,000
