  • 1163: A hurricane hit villages in Holland and Friesland causing flooding
  • 1844: The Rochdale Pioneers opened business at their cooperative in Rochdale, England, beginning the Cooperative Movement
  • 1906: The British Parliament passed two important pieces of social legislation: The Trades Disputes Bill which legalized peaceful picketing and The Workingmen’s Compensation Act which broadened employers’ liability for accidents
  • 1921: In Truax v Corrigan, The US Supreme Court ruled state court injunctions against labor unions and picketing unconstitutional
  • 1923: Nepal changed from a British protectorate to an independent nation
  • 1929: The first group hospital insurance plan in the US was offered in Dallas, Texas
  • 1946: An earthquake in Southern Japan killed 1,086 people
  • 1948: The State of Eire (formerly Irish Free State) declared its independence
  • 1959: Citizens of Deerfield, Illinois blocked the building of interracial housing
  • 1970: In Oregon v Mitchell, the US Supreme Court lowered the minimum voting age in U.S. federal elections to 18
  • 1991: The Soviet Union formally dissolved as 11 of 12 republics signed a treaty forming the Commonwealth of Independent States
  • 2005: The Civil Partnership Act went into effect in the UK
