On This Day

  • Abilities Day
  • 1689: A significant earthquake struck Innsbruck, Austria
  • 1731: The Dutch people revolted against a meat tax
  • 1807: The US Congress passed an Embargo Act and President Thomas Jefferson signed it into law. The law prohibited American ships from trading in foreign ports related to hostilities between France and Britain
  • 1894: The Dutch coast hit by a hurricane on this day and the next
  • 1917: Flanders declared its independence
  • 1972: A magnitude 6+ earthquake struck Managua, Nicaragua killing over 12,000 people
  • 1974: Referendums were held in Comoros with 3 islands voting for independence and 1 for staying French
  • 1988: South Africa signed an accord granting independence to South West Africa
  • 2003: A magnitude 6.6 earthquake hit near San Simeon, California
  • 2010: President Barack Obama signed into law a repeal of “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell”, a 17-year-old policy banning homosexuals serving openly in the US military
  • 2016: The Ebola vaccine VSV-EBOV was found to be 70-100% effective, becoming the world’s first proven vaccine against Ebola, according to a study published in The Lancet
  • 2017: The UN Security Council voted 15 to 0 for additional sanctions on North Korea, including measures to slash the country’s petrol imports by up to 90%
  • 2018: A tsunami hit Indonesia’s Sunda Strait killing over 400 people after part of the Anak Krakatoa volcano slipped into the sea
