Many days there are far too many anniversaries, holidays, and observances to post about individually on social media, so in an effort to have more of them available, LLPHP is going to experiment with posting them daily. Please note all holidays and observances listed as “National” days are American holidays and observances unless it is stated otherwise.

On This Day

  • 1497: An antitax insurrection in Cornwall was suppressed at Blackheath
  • 1559: The Jewish quarter of Prague was burned and looted
  • 1740: King Frederik II of Prussia ended torture and guaranteed religion and freedom of the press
  • 1772: The UK’s Somerset v Stewart court case found slavery was unsupported by English common law which encouraged the abolitionist movement
  • 1851: San Francisco experienced it’s 7th major fire in 2 years. The fire destroyed part a significant part of San Francisco, including City Hall and Jenny Lind Theatre
  • 1875: The Garonne Flood occurred causing great damage in Verdun and Toulouse, and killed about 1,000 people
  • 1933: The German Social-Democratic Party (SPD) was forbidden
  • 1940: Nazi Germany’s SS rounded up 31 German/Polish/Dutch Jews in Roermond, Netherlands
  • 1970: US President Richard Nixon signed an extension of the 1965 Voting Rights Act which set the voting age at 18 in all federal, state, and local elections
  • 1970: The US Supreme Court ruled juries of less than 12 people are constitutional
  • 1992: The US Supreme Court ruled “hate crime” laws violated free-speech rights
  • 2002: An earthquake in western Iran measured 6.5 on the Richter scale and killed more than 260 people
