Many days there are far too many anniversaries, holidays, and observances to post about individually on social media, so in an effort to have more of them available, LLPHP is going to experiment with posting them daily. On This Day

  • Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day
  • 1703: The “Great Storm of 1703” hit Southern England killing thousands of people and destroying over a dozen of the Royal Navy’s ships
  • 1941: The Imperial Japanese Navy attacked the US fleet at Pearl Harbor Naval Base, Hawaii, killing 2,403 people and drawing the US into World War II
  • 1949: Chiang Kai-shek fled Mainland China to Taiwan
  • 1960: Ivory Coast claimed independence from France
  • 1988: A 6.9 earthquake struck Spitak, Armenia killing 25,000-50,000 people and leaving up to 500,000 people homeless
  • 2003: The Conservative Party of Canada was officially recognized after the merger of the Canadian Alliance and Progressive Conservative Party of Canada
  • 2006: A tornado struck Kensal Green, North West London, seriously damaging around 150 properties
  • 2014: Typhoon Hagupit hit the central Philippines causing millions of people to flee their homes for better shelter
  • 2014: Human Rights Watch’s Asia Division called for an investigation into the shooting of peaceful protestors by Indonesian security forces
  • 2015: Beijing issued its first ever red alert for pollution
  • 2016: A 6.5 earthquake in Aceh province, Indonesia killed about 100 people
  • 2017: Australia’s parliament voted to legalize gay marriage
