• Bodhi Day
• 1863: US President Abraham Lincoln issued his Amnesty Proclamation and plan for Reconstruction of the Southern States
• 1876: Suriname began compulsory education for 7-12 year olds
• 1921: Eamon de Valera publicly repudiated the Anglo-Irish Treaty
• 1935: Japanese military police launched a violent suppression of the religious sect Oomoto because of their beliefs
• 1936: The NAACP filed suit to equalize the salaries of black and white teachers
• 1941: The Chełmno Extermination Camp opened, outside of Łódź, Poland
• 1949: The Chinese Nationalist government moved from the Chinese mainland to Formosa
• 1952: French troops fired on demonstrators in Casablanca, killing 50 people
• 1959: Dom Mintoff demanded independence for Malta
• 1974: The Irish Republican Socialist Party formed
• 1987: Occupied Palestinians began an intifada (uprising) against Israel
