On This Day
- 1196: The “Saint Nicolas Flood” flooded the Northern Dutch Coast
- 1424: Don Alfonso V of Aragon granted Barcelona the right to exclude Jews
- 1648: Thomas Pride prevented 96 Presbyterians from sitting in the English Parliament in what is known as Pride’s Purge
- 1849: Harriet Tubman escaped from slavery in Maryland for the second and final time
- 1865: The 13th Amendment to the United States Constitution was ratified, abolishing slavery
- 1912: China voted for universal human rights
- 1921: The Anglo-Irish Treaty was signed, partitioning Northern Ireland and granting Ireland dominion status
- 1929: Turkey introduced female suffrage
- 1956: Nelson Mandela and 156 others were arrested for political activities in South Africa
- 1957: Indonesia began nationalizing Dutch possessions
- 1977: South Africa granted Bophuthatswana independence
- 1992: 300,000 Hindus destroyed the mosque of Babri, India and killed 4 people
- 2012: 7 people were killed and 770 people were injured during Egyptian protests
- 2012: Typhoon Bopha’s death toll rose to 418 with 318 missing and 179,000 displaced
