- International Creativity and Innovation Day
- Thomas Jefferson Day
- 1556: The Pope orders that Portuguese Marranos who revert back to Judaism are to be burned
- 1598: The Edict of Nantes was signed, granting political rights to France’s Calvinist Protestants, aka French Huguenots
- 1829: The Roman Catholic Relief Act was passed by the British Parliament as the culmination of the process of Catholic Emancipation throughout the UK
- 1863: The Society for the Relief of the Ruptured and Crippled was incorporated in the State of New York
- 1873: 60 African Americans were killed in the Colfax Massacre in Grant Parish, Louisiana
- 1911: The US House of Representatives voted to institute direct elections of Senators to Congress
- 1918: An electrical fire at the Oklahoma State Hospital killed 38 mental patients
- 1919: British troops opened fire on demonstrators in Amritsar, India killing 350 people
- 1921: The Spanish Communist Workers’ Party was founded
- 1924: Greece held a plebiscite regarding becoming a republic
- 1926: Cyclists without a bicycle-tax-stamp were rounded up in Amsterdam
- 1943: Nazis discovered a mass grave of Polish officers near Katyn that had been killed during the Katyn Massacre, in which the Soviet Union executed nearly 22,000 people
- 1944: South Carolina rejected black suffrage
- 1944: Transport #71 departed the Drancy, France internment camp, taking 1,500 French Jews to Auschwitz
- 1944: New Zealand and the Soviet Union established diplomatic relations
- 1946: Belgian premier Acker proclaimed the wage and price freeze instituted during the war was over
- 1948: Vehicles bringing Jewish staff and medical supplies to Hadassah Hospital and University on Mount Scopus, Jerusalem were attacked by Arab forces. 79 people were killed by bombs, grenades, and sniper fire in what is known as the Hadassah Convoy Massacre
- 1959: The Vatican issued an edict forbidding Roman Catholics from voting for communists
- 1975: Christian Falange killed 27 Palestinians, beginning the Lebanese civil war
- 1992: A magnitude 5.5 earthquake hit the Netherlands
- 1992: In the Great Chicago Flood, Chicago’s underground tunnels flooded
- 1994: The Rwandan army, accompanied by civilian militia members, massacred over 1000 civilians taking shelter in a church in Kigali, Rwanda during the Rwandan Genocide
- 2006: Powerful tornadoes ripped through Iowa City, Iowa
- 2020: NY Governor Andrew Cuomo said “I believe the worst is over if we continue to be smart,” about the COVID-19 pandemic in New York as death toll passes 10,000
