- I Am A Mentor Day
- 1915: The first elected practicing Jewish governor in the US, Moses Alexander, took office in Idaho
- 1948: Burma declared independence from the UK
- 1969: A People’s Democracy march between Belfast and Derry was repeatedly attacked by loyalists and off-duty police officers
- 1970: More than 15,000 people were killed in Tonghai County, China after a magnitude 7.7 earthquake
- 1975: US President Gerald Ford issued Executive Order 11828 establishing a Commission on CIA Activities within the US
- 1998: A massive ice storm hit eastern Canada and the northeastern United States, continuing through January 10 and causing widespread destruction
- 2018: A ‘Bomb Cyclone’ hit the Northeastern US prompting flooding and lots of snow
- 2019: Thailand’s worst storm in 30 years, Tropical Storm Pabuk made landfall on the country’s east coast
- 2020: The death toll from Australian bush fires reached 23 and PM Scott Morrison announced national defense forces would be employed to help fight the more than 200 fires, amid criticism of his leadership
- 2020: Floods and landslides caused by torrential rains in Jakarta, Indonesia killed at least 53 people
- 2021: UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced a new national lockdown for England following Scotland, as COVID-19 spread rapidly with hospitalizations now higher than the first wave
