On This Day

  • Safer Internet Day
  • 1526: A major storm struck the Dutch coast causing many deaths
  • 1600: The Vatican convicted scholar Giordano Bruno and sentenced him to death
  • 1750: A minor earthquake occurred in London
  • 1887: The Dawes Act authorizes the US President to survey Native American tribal land and divide it into individual allotments. Those who accepted allotments and lived separately from their tribe were granted United States citizenship
  • 1889: Major flooding ravaged the Dutch coast
  • 1905: A cyclone hit Tahiti and adjacent islands, killing approximately 10,000 people
  • 1920: Swiss men voted against women’s suffrage
  • 1942: Congress advised FDR to lock up Japanese Americans en masse so they wouldn’t oppose the US war effort
  • 1946: Portuguese Dictator António de Oliveira Salazar forbade opposition parties
  • 1955: The Government of Sindh abolished the Jagirdari system in the province. One million acres (4000 km²) of land thus acquired was to be distributed among the landless peasants
  • 1962: In Paris, 8 people were killed at a protest against Algerian independence
  • 1968: Highway patrol officers killed 3 students and injured 27 others who were demonstrating at South Carolina State University in what is known as the Orangeburg Massacre. It was the first student killing by law enforcement in the US
  • 1977: A magnitude 5 earthquake was felt in San Francisco
  • 1989: A rare 5 cm of snow fell in the outskirts of Los Angeles
  • 1995: A 6.4 earthquake struck Trujillo, Colombia killing at least 46 people
  • 1996: The U.S. Congress passed the Communications Decency Act, their first attempt to regulate content on the internet
  • 2013: 100,000 people marched to demand justice for the atrocities of the Bangladesh Liberation War in Dhaka
  • 2013: A massive blizzard began in the US and Canada that resulted in 15 deaths, 5,300 cancelled flights, and loss of power for 900,000 people
  • 2019: Washington State Governor Jay Inslee declared a state of emergency after heavy snowfall
  • 2021: Martial law was declared in Mandalay, Myanmar amid continuing protests against the country’s military coup
