On This Day

  • 1673: English King Charles II accepted a Test Act excluding Roman Catholics from public office. Several Test Acts were passed to ensure only members of the Church of England could be public officials
  • 1799: New York passed a law aimed at gradually abolishing slavery in the state
  • 1804: Thousands of White people were massacred in Haiti
  • 1848: Niagara Falls stopped flowing for 30 hours due to an ice jam
  • 1852: Ohio passed a law limiting children under 18 and women to no more than 10 hours of work per day
  • 1943: Meat, butter, and cheese rationing began in the US due to World War II
  • 1961: The 23rd Amendment to the US Constitution was ratified, allowing citizens living in Washington, DC to vote in presidential elections
  • 1968: Students seized control of a building at Maryland’s Bowie State College in protest of racial inequality
  • 1971: William Calley Jr of the US Army was found guilty of premeditated killings in the My Lai Massacre
  • 1971: Chilean President Allende nationalized banks and copper mines
  • 1976: 8 Ohio National Guardsmen were indicted for shooting 4 Kent State students
  • 1988: The US Congress discontinued aid to Nicaraguan contras
  • 1989: Soviet hockey players were permitted to play for the US National Hockey League (NHL) for the first time
  • 2014: The first same-sex couples were legally married in the UK as a result of The Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Act 2013
  • 2015: Voting in the Nigerian General Election was extended to a second day after attacks by Boko Haram killed 43 people
  • 2017: UK Prime Minister Theresa May sent a letter to the EU invoking Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty, formally triggering Brexit
