On This Day

• 1795: The 11th Amendment to the US Constitution was ratified affirming the power of the States
• 1812: An 8.2 earthquake shook New Madrid, Missouri
• 1856: The Colonial Tasmanian Parliament passed the first piece of legislation, the Electoral Act of 1856, anywhere in the world providing for elections by secret ballot
• 1894: The Cripple Creek miners’ strike, led by the Western Federation of Miners, began in Cripple Creek, Colorado
• 1971: Switzerland voted in a referendum for national women’s suffrage
• 1974: Grenada gained independence from Great Britain
• 1987: Police in South Korea made hundreds of arrests during protest demonstrations, the country’s biggest for 6 years, after a student died in police custody
• 1990: Karachi police killed 22 anti-nationalist demonstrators
• 1990: The USSR’s Communist Party agreed to allow opposition political parties
• 2009: Bushfires in Victoria left 173 people dead in possibly the worst natural disaster in Australia’s history to date
• 2019: Sierra Leone President Julius Maada Bio declared a national emergency over rape and sexual assault violence after instances doubled
• 2019: A measles outbreak was declared in the Philippines with 1,813 cases and 26 deaths
• 2019: France recalled its Italian ambassador from Rome after Italian deputy PM Luigi Di Maio met with yellow vest protesters
• 2021: A Himalayan glacier crashed into the Dhauliganga river, destroying a dam and causing a huge flood in Uttarakhand province, India. The flood killed 26 people and left 150 people missing
