- Stop Bullying Day
- 1267: The Synod of Breslau ordered the Jews of Silesia to wear special caps
- 1287: A massive storm swept across Southeast England hitting Cinque Ports and realigning the coastline so that New Romney Port is now a mile inland
- 1555: Bishop of Gloucester John Hooper was burned at the stake for heresy
- 1667: Russia and Poland signed the Treaty of Andrussovo
- 1801: France and Austria signed the Peace of Luneville
- 1886: US President Grover Cleveland declared a state of emergency in Seattle because of anti-Chinese violence
- 1909: The first US federal legislation on narcotics prohibiting the importation, possession, and use of opium was passed
- 1922: A rare snow fell on Mauna Loa, Hawaii
- 1926: Teaching the theory of evolution was forbidden in Atlanta, Georgia schools
- 1941: Nazi collaborators destroyed the pro-Jewish café Alcazar Amsterdam because the owners refused to hang “No Entry for Jews” signs in front of the cafe
- 1943: US President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed an executive order setting a minimum 48-hour work week in a number of critical war industries
- 1946: The Dutch Labor Party, Dutch Social Democratic Party, was formed
- 1955: US federations of trade unions merged into the AFL/CIO
- 1962: Jamaica signed an agreement to become independent
- 1971: An earthquake in California’s San Fernando Valley killed 64 people and caused over $500 million damage
- 1972: The British government declared a state of emergency after a month-long coal miners’ strike
- 2014: Protests erupted in Sarajevo and other cities in Bosnia-Herzegovina as the unemployment rate remained at 40% generally and 57% for youth
- 2020: Deaths from the COVID-19 virus overtook those of Sars (2003) with 813 deaths worldwide, and more than 34,800 known infections
- 2020: Storm Ciara made landfall in Northern Scotland bringing widespread wind and flooding to northern Europe resulting in 18 deaths
