On This Day
- 1613: The Peace of Knarod ended the War of Kalmar between Denmark and Sweden
- 1667: The Treaty of Andrussovo ended the 13 year war between Poland and Russia
- 1920: The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) was founded
- 1942: Nazi officials held the notorious Wannsee Conference in Berlin to organize the “final solution”, the extermination of Europe’s Jews
- 1950: Suriname became independent within the Realm of the Netherlands
- 1965: Generalissimo Francisco Franco met with Jewish representatives to discuss legitimizing Jewish communities in Spain
- 1971: The single “What’s Going On” by Marvin Gaye about police brutality was released
- 1986: The federal holiday honoring Martin Luther King Jr. was observed for the first time
- 1990: A crackdown on Azerbaijani pro-independence demonstrations by Soviet army known as “Black January” occurred in Baku
- 1999: The China News Service announced new government restrictions on Internet use aimed especially at Internet cafés
- 2013: Austrians voted in a referendum to continue to require compulsory military service
