  • 1665: New York approved a new code guaranteeing Protestants religious rights
  • 1864: the Great Sheffield Flood, the largest man-made disaster ever to befall England, killed over 250 people in Sheffield
  • 1918: US Army mess cook Private Albert Gitchell of Fort Riley, Kansas became the first documented case of Spanish flu in the start of a worldwide pandemic that killed 50-100 million
  • 1959: “Raisin in the Sun”, the first Broadway play by a black woman, opened
  • 1990: Lithuania declared its Independence
  • 2011: a 9.0 magnitude earthquake struck east of Sendai, Japan, triggering a tsunami that killed thousands of people and caused the second worst nuclear accident in history at the Fukushima nuclear plant
