  • 1525: Paris’ Parliament began pursuit of Protestants
  • 1627: France and Spain signed an accord to fight Protestantism together
  • 1760: The Great Fire of Boston destroyed 349 buildings
  • 1774: The British Parliament passed the first of the Intolerable Acts: the Boston Port Act, which closed Boston harbor until colonists would pay for damages following the Boston Tea Party
  • 1816: The US Supreme Court affirmed its right to review state court decisions
  • 1861: An earthquake completely destroyed Mendoza, Argentina
  • 1865: Michigan authorized workers’ cooperatives
  • 1933: Dachau, the first Nazi concentration camp, was completed
  • 1939: 7,000 Jews fled German occupied Memel, Lithuania
  • 1952: The US Senate ratified the treaty restoring sovereignty to Japan
  • 1956: Mount Bezymianny on the USSR’s Kamchatka Peninsula erupted
  • 1956: Tunisia gained independence from France
  • 1956: Union workers ended a 156-day strike at Westinghouse Electric Corp
  • 1968: US President Lyndon B Johnson signed a bill removing gold backing from US paper money
  • 1982: Reverend Andries Treurnicht formed the Conservative Party of South Africa
  • 1984: The US Senate rejected a Constitutional Amendment to permit spoken prayer in public schools
  • 1986: New York City passed its first lesbian and gay rights legislation
  • 1991: The US Supreme Court ruled unanimously employers can’t exclude women from jobs where exposure to toxic chemicals could potentially damage a fetus
  • 2004: Stephen Harper won the leadership of the newly created Conservative Party of Canada, becoming the party’s first leader
  • 2005: A 6.6 earthquake hit Fukuoka, Japan, its first major quake in over 100 years, killing one person and injuring hundreds
  • 2006: Cyclone Larry made landfall in eastern Australia, destroying most of the country’s banana crop
  • 2019: Nebraska Governor Pete Ricketts called the state’s flooding “the most widespread destruction we have ever seen in our state’s history”
  • 2020: Smoke from Australian bushfires killed more people than the fires – 417 vs 33 according to new study published in the “Medical Journal of Australia”
  • 2021: Severe “hundred-year” flooding in Sydney and the surrounding state of New South Wales prompted evacuation orders
