  • Melanoma Monday
  • National Fire Day
  • National Life Insurance Day
  • 1598: France and Spain signed the Peace of Vervins in which Spain recognized France’s King and returned captured territories
  • 1668: France and Spain signed the Treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle, ending the War of Devolution, and codifying territorial changes
  • 1808: An uprising against French occupation began in Madrid
  • 1833: Russian Tsar Nicolas I banned the public sale of serfs
  • 1876: The Batak Massacre took place during the April Uprising of Bulgarians against the occupying Ottoman Empire. Most estimates say about 5000 people were killed in the massacre. Although the Uprising was suppressed in about a month, it set the stage for the Russo-Turkish War and the liberation of Bulgaria from Ottoman rule
  • 1927: In Buck v Bell, the US Supreme Court allowed forced sterilization of “unfit” people by states’ authorities for eugenic reasons
  • 1933: Adolf Hitler banned trade unions in Germany
  • 1941: The US FCC approved regular scheduled commercial TV broadcasts beginning July 1
  • 1941: Nazi occupied Netherlands laid off Jewish journalists
  • 1945: The Battle of Berlin ended as the Soviet army took Berlin and General Weidling surrendered
  • 1955: India passed the Untouchability (Offences) Act prohibiting discrimination against the Dalits or “Untouchables” caste
  • 1956: The US Methodist Church disallowed racial separation, called for an end to racial discrimination, and allowed women to become full, ordained clergy
  • 1963: 1000 students marched on downtown Birmingham, Alabama in the Children’s Crusade to advocate for an end to segregation and racial discrimination
  • 1972: 126 people were killed in an electrical fire in the Sunshine Silver Mine in Kellogg, Idaho
  • 1983: A 6.7 earthquake injured 487 people in Coalinga, California
  • 1990: South Africa and the African National Congress (ANC) opened talks to end apartheid
  • 1994: Dr Jack Kervokian was found innocent on charges of assisting suicides, leading to a national discussion of the subject
  • 2004: About 630 Muslims were killed by Christians in the second part of Nigeria’s Yelwa Massacre in retaliation for the killing of nearly 100 Christians in February
  • 2008: Cyclone Nargis made landfall in Myanmar killing over 130,000 people and leaving millions of people homeless
  • 2011: The 2011 E. coli O104:H4 outbreak struck Europe, mostly in Germany, leaving more than 30 people dead and many others sick from the bacteria outbreak
  • 2018: The Spanish Basque separatist group Eta announced it would formally disbanding after 50 years
  • 2018: Iowa passed what was at the time the US’s strictest abortion ban, based on a fetal heartbeat
