- 743: Slave exports by Christians to heathen areas were prohibited
- 1382: The Maillotin Uprising against taxes occurred in France
- 1420: Pope Martinus I called for a crusade against the Hussite protestants
- 1562: Francois de Guise’s troops opened fire on a Huguenot congregation killing 50 people, in the “Blood Bath At Vassy” which set off the French Wars of Religion
- 1587: Puritan English parliamentary leader Sir Peter Wentworth was confined in London Tower for interfering with the Queen’s “ecclesiastical prerogative”
- 1692: Sarah Goode, Sarah Osborne, and Tituba were arrested for witchcraft in Salem, Massachusetts
- 1780: Pennsylvania became the first US state to abolish slavery for newborns
- 1784: Edward Kidder, a pie-maker, opened the first formal cooking school in London
- 1815: Sunday observance in the Netherlands was regulated by law
- 1831: Lord John Russell introduced a Reform Bill in the British House of Commons on the government’s behalf to revamp the electoral system of England and Wales and expand voting eligibility for men
- 1847: Michigan became the first English-speaking jurisdiction to abolish the death penalty, except for cases involving treason against the state
- 1864: Rebecca Lee became the first African American woman to receive a medical degree in the US
- 1875: The US Congress passed a Civil Rights Act, though it was scarcely enforced and was invalidated by the Supreme Court in 1883
- 1919: The March 1st, or Samil Movement, began in Korea as a demonstration of resistance to Japanese occupation
- 1924: Germany’s prohibition against the Communist Party (KPD) was lifted
- 1943: A Jewish old age home for the disabled in Amsterdam was raided
- 1944: Massive strikes took place in several northern Italian towns
- 1967: Dominica and St Lucia gained independence from Great Britain
- 1968: Political Party Radikalen (PPR) was established in the Netherlands
- 1980: The US enacted the Crude Oil Windfall Profit Tax Act as part of a compromise between the Carter Administration and the Congress over the decontrol of crude oil prices
- 1983: A tornado tore through Los Angeles, injuring 33 people
- 1985: US Military leaders at the Pentagon accepted the theory that atomic war would cause a nuclear winter
- 2007: Tornadoes swarmed across the southern United States, killing at least 20 people, including 8 at a high school in Enterprise, Alabama
- 2016: Two Guatemalan military officers were convicted of sexual slavery during the country’s civil war, the first ever prosecution of sexual slavery during an armed conflict
