• International Chernobyl Disaster Remembrance Day
• Lesbian Visibility Day
• 1220: German King Frederick II granted bishops sovereign rights
• 1654: Jews were expelled from Brazil
• 1655: The Dutch West Indies Co denied Peter Stuyvesant’s desire to exclude Jews from New Amsterdam
• 1859: Dan Sickles was acquitted of murder due to temporary insanity- the first time the defense was used successfully in the US
• 1933: Jewish students were barred from school in Germany
• 1937: The German Luftwaffe destroyed the Basque town of Guernica in Spain
• 1938: Austrian Jews were required to register property above 5,000 Reichsmarks
• 1941: Potato rationing began in Holland
• 1966: A magnitude 7.5 earthquake destroyed Tashkent, Uzbekistan
• 1968: Students seized control of the administration building at The Ohio State University
• 1971: The heaviest rains ever recorded, 15″ in 24 hours, fell in Brazil’s Bahia district
• 1971: Martial law was implemented in much of Turkey and civil rights were suspended after terrorist activity in response to a coup the previous month
• 1974: A landslide in Peru’s Huancavelica Province created a natural dam
• 1986: In the world’s worst nuclear disaster, the 4th reactor at Chernobyl nuclear power station in USSR exploded killing 31 people and spreading radioactive contamination through much of Western Europe
• 1990: 126 people died in a magnitude 6.9 earthquake in China
• 1991: 23 people were killed by tornadoes in Kansas and Oklahoma
• 1994: Voting began in the first ever multi-racial elections in South Africa
• 2021: President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced Turkey would go into full lockdown until May 17 to a curb COVID-19 surge and the world’s 4th highest caseload
• 2021: The US, the EU, and other countries announced they were sending pandemic aid to India as it’s COVID-19 crisis continued to worsen
