Many days there are far too many anniversaries, holidays, and observances to post about individually on social media, so in an effort to have more of them available, LLPHP is going to experiment with posting them daily here. On This Day

  • International Day of the Unborn Child
  • International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade
  • National Cerebral Palsy Day
  • 1669: Sicily’s Mount Etna erupted, destroying the city of Nicolosi and killing 20,000 people
  • 1802: Great Britain and the French Republic signed the Treaty of Amiens ending the War of the Second Coalition and the French Revolutionary Wars
  • 1807: The British Parliament abolished the slave trade throughout the British Empire and levied a penalty of £120 per slave for ship captains violating the prohibition
  • 1900: The US Socialist Party formed in Indianapolis
  • 1913: Dayton, Ohio was almost destroyed when the Scioto, Great Miami, and Muskingum Rivers reach flooded stage simultaneously. Known as the Great Dayton Flood, it was Ohio’s greatest natural disaster
  • 1923: The British government granted Trans-Jordan autonomy
  • 1931: The “Scottsboro Boys” were arrested in Alabama, accused of raping 2 white women. It is a commonly cited example of racism and violations of the right to a fair trial
  • 1937: Italy and Yugoslavia signed the Pact of Belgrade, a non-aggression treaty
  • 1942: The first 700 Jews from the Polish Lvov district reached the Bełżec Concentration camp
  • 1943: 97% of Dutch physicians went on strike against Nazi registration
  • 1949: The Soviet Union began Operation Pribioi, the mass deportation of 90,000 Estonians, Latvians, and Lithuanians to inhospitable areas in the Soviet Union
  • 1955: East Germany was granted full sovereignty by the occupying USSR
  • 1957: The Treaty of Rome established the European Economic Community, also known as the European Common Market
  • 1964: Egypt ended a 12 year state of siege
  • 1965: Martin Luther King Jr led 25,000 protestors to the state capitol in Montgomery, Alabama
  • 1976: The Argentine military junta banned leftist political parties
  • 1986: The US Supreme Court ruled the Air Force could ban the wearing of yarmulkes
  • 1987: The US Supreme Court ruled that gender-based workplace affirmative action plans did not constitute discrimination on the basis of sex under the Civil Rights Act 1964
  • 2006: Protesters demanded a new election in Belarus following a rigged presidential election, clashes with riot police took place, and opposition leader Aleksander Kozulin and several other protesters were arrested
  • 2019: Ongoing power blackouts in Caracas, Venezuela prompted the government to tell workers and students to stay at home
