On This Day

  • World Asthma Day
  • World Press Freedom Day
  • 1616: The Treaty of Loudun ended a French civil war
  • 1841: New Zealand separated from New South Wales and became a separate Crown Colony
  • 1845: Macon B Allen became the first African American lawyer admitted to the bar in Massachusetts
  • 1845: Fire killed 1,600 people in a popular theater in Canton, China
  • 1851: A sixth major fire in San Francisco destroyed 1500-2000 buildings
  • 1901: Fire destroyed approximately 1,700 buildings in Jacksonville, Florida
  • 1921: West Virginia imposed the first state sales tax in the US
  • 1926: Britain’s Trade Union Congress called for the country’s first ever general strike in support of striking coal miners, which would last 9 days
  • 1928: The Jinan Incident began between Japanese soldiers and Chiang Kai-Shek’s National Revolutionary Army in Jinan, China. Thousands of people, mostly Chinese, were killed and events were set in motion that led the the 1931 Japanese invasion of Manchuria
  • 1929: Prussia banned anti-fascists
  • 1942: Nazis executed 72 members of Dutch underground resistance groups at the Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp
  • 1942: Nazis required Dutch Jews to wear a Jewish star
  • 1943: A 4 day national strike against obligatory labor camps ended in the Netherlands after the Nazis killed about 200 people
  • 1944 Meat rationing ended in the US
  • 1947: Japan’s post-war constitution went into effect granting universal suffrage, stripping Emperor Hirohito of all but symbolic power, and outlawing Japan’s right to make war
  • 1965: Cambodia dropped diplomatic relations with the US
  • 1967: African American students seized the finance building at Northwestern University
  • 1971: The Nixon administration arrested 13,000 protesters against the Vietnam War in 3 days
  • 1991: The Windhoek Declaration on freedom of the press in Africa was adopted
  • 1999: Oklahoma City, Oklahoma was hit by a tornado that killed 42 people, injured 665 more, and did $1 billion in damage
  • 2018: The Indian government confirmed around 110 people died in dust storms in the last 9 days
  • 2018: Kilauea volcano on Big Island, Hawaii began erupting forcing evacuations
  • 2019: Cyclone Fani struck India and Bangladesh, killing 33 people after one of the biggest human evacuations ever (1.2 million people in India) in 24 hours
  • 2020: Brazil confirmed it was the 9th nation where there had been more than 100,000 COVID-19 cases with 7,025 deaths
  • 2021: German police announced operations and arrests regarding ‘Boystown’, the world’s largest child abuse image website
  • 2021: The Congo announced the end of the latest Ebola outbreak after three months with six deaths
