  • Kent State Shootings Remembrance Day
  • National Anxiety Disorders Screening Day
  • Renewal Day
  • 1415: Religious reformers John Wycliffe and Jan Hus were condemned for heresy and would be burned at the stake
  • 1535: Five Carthusian monks from London Charterhouse monastery were hung, drawn and quartered at Tyburn, London, for refusing to acknowledge Henry VIII as head of the Church of England
  • 1776: Rhode Island declared independence from Great Britain
  • 1818: The Netherlands and Great Britain signed a treaty against illegal slave handling
  • 1846: The US state of Michigan ended use of the death penalty
  • 1897: A fire in a Paris bazaar at Rue Jean Goujon killed 200 people
  • 1916: Ned Daly, Willie Pearse, Michael O’Hanrahan, and Joseph Plunkett were executed by British authorities following the Easter Rising against British rule over Ireland
  • 1919: Demonstrations organised by students erupted in China after news from the Paris Peace Conference that the Allies intended to give Shangtung to Japan
  • 1923: New York State repealed the Mullan-Gage Act Prohibition law though the federal Volstead Act was still in place
  • 1925: The League of Nations held a conference on arms control and poison gas usage
  • 1942: Food was first rationed in US
  • 1942: German occupiers imprisoned 450 prominent Dutch as hostages
  • 1948: The Hague Court of Justice convicted Nazi SS officer Hans Rauter of Crimes against Humanity leading to his execution on March 24, 1949
  • 1961: The Congress of Racial Equality (CORE) began freedom rides leaving from Washington, DC
  • 1961: South Africa African National Congress (ANC) leader John Nkadimeng was arrested for entering the Sekhukhuneland area to visit his mother without a permit
  • 1970: The Ohio National Guard killed 4 people and injured 9 more at Kent State in Ohio
  • 1977: US Catholic bishops rescinded automatic excommunications for divorced and remarried Catholics, though receiving communion was still outlawed if previous marriages were not annulled by Church tribunals
  • 1979: Margaret Thatcher became the first woman to be elected Prime Minister of the United Kingdom
  • 1990: Latvia’s parliament voted for independence
  • 1992: The US Army and Marine Corps forces arrived in Los Angeles to end rioting following the acquittal of four police officers over the beating of Rodney King
  • 2007: Greensburg, Kansas was almost completely destroyed by an F5 tornado
  • 2021: Mexico’s President Andrés Manuel López Obrador made an historic apology to the Mayan people for abuses against them in the five centuries since the Spanish conquest
