• Bladder Cancer Awareness Day
• National Wildfire Community Preparedness Day
• 1355: 1,200 Jews of Toledo, Spain were killed by Count Henry of Trastamara
• 1700: William Penn began monthly meetings for blacks advocating emancipation
• 1727: Empress Catherine I of Russia expelled Jews from Ukraine
• 1775: Turkish state of Bukovina seceded from Austria
• 1832: Greece became independent again and Otto of Bavaria was chosen as king
• 1840: A tornado struck Natchez, Mississippi, killing 317 people
• 1861: A riot occurred with fighting between advocates of secession and Union supporters in Knoxville, Tennessee
• 1862: Much of Enschede, Netherlands was destroyed by fire
• 1867: African Americans staged a ride-in to protest segregation in New Orleans
• 1902: St Vincent’s La Soufrière volcano erupted killing 1,680 people
• 1913: The British House of Commons rejected women’s right to vote
• 1920: USSR recognized Georgia’s independence
• 1923: Mine strike at Belgian Borinage railroad
• 1928: The United Kingdom lowered the voting age for women from 30 to 21
• 1938: Dutch Minister of Justice Goseling called fugitives of Nazi-Germany “undesired strangers”
• 1942: The Nazi’s ordered the execution of all of the Jewish pregnant women of Kovno Ghetto
• 1943: Dutch men 18-35 were required to report to labor camps
• 1945: The unconditional German surrender to the Allies was signed by General Alfred Jodl at Rheims
• 1945: The Nazi SS opened fire on a crowd in Amsterdam killing 22 people
• 1946: William H Hastie was inaugurated as the first black governor of the Virgin Islands
• 1955: The USSR signed a peace treaty with France and Great Britain
• 1984: A $180 million out-of-court settlement was reached in a lawsuit by American Vietnam Veterans regarding the use of Agent Orange
• 1993: South Africa agreed to hold multi-racial elections
• 2012: A NATO air strike killed 14 people and wounded 6 civilians in Afghanistan’s Badghis Province
• 2013: 4 people were killed after the Mayon Volcano erupted in the Philippines
• 2017: MTV became the first major awards show to adopt gender-neutral categories
• 2018: More mudslides in Rwanda killed 18 people, bringing the year’s death toll from mudslides to 200 people
• 2019: Denver became the first US city to decriminalize psilocybin aka “magic mushrooms”
• 2019: Amid worldwide criticism, the Turkish Supreme Electoral Council decided to re-run the Istanbul mayoral election after it was narrowly won by a candidate from an opposition party
• 2019: Venezuela’s Congress stripped opposition lawmakers of immunity and accused them of treason
• 2020: Travis and Gregory McMichael were arrested for the murder of Ahmaud Arbery after video of the killing surfaced
