On This Day
- 1798: The US first levied direct federal taxes on states-on dwellings, land and slaves
- 1863: Jews of Holstein, Germany were granted equality
- 1933: Germany began mandatory sterilization of people with hereditary illnesses
- 1933: All non-Nazi parties were banned in Germany
- 1941: 6,000 Lithuanian Jews were exterminated at the Viszalsyan Camp
- 1942: Riots against Jews happened in Amsterdam
- 1946: The mass murder of Jews in Kielce, Poland occurred
- 1953: The first US national monument dedicated to a black American was established, preserving the boyhood home of agricultural scientist and inventor George Washington Carver in Newton County, Missouri
- 1987: Taiwan ended 37 years of martial law
- 2012: Flooding on the Japanese island of Kyushu killed 20 people and displaced about 250,000 people
- 2014: The death toll from the West African Ebola outbreak passed 500
- 2018: More than 300 people were reported killed in protests against the Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega
