On This Day
- International Day of the World’s Indigenous People
- 1848: Austria and Sardinia signed a cease fire
- 1848: In the US, the Barnburners, an anti-slavery party, merged with the Free Soil Party
- 1945: The US dropped an atomic bomb on Nagasaki, Japan. Over the next 5 years, 100,000 deaths were attributable to the bomb
- 1960: Jacksonville, Florida experienced a race riot
- 1961: James Benton Parsons became the first African American to be nominated to a US Federal District Court
- 2012: Flooding in the Philippines leads to the deaths of 70 people
- 2019: A landslide from torrential rain killed 59 people in Mon state, Myanmar and caused 80,000 people into emergency shelters
