  • 1794: Haiti, under Toussaint Louverture, revolted against France
  • 1844: Johan Thorbecke argues for a general right to vote
  • 1861: Arkansas and Tennessee became the ninth and tenth states to secede from the US
  • 1882: The US Congress passed the Chinese Exclusion Act bringing a temporary end to Chinese immigration
  • 1914: The British House of Lords rejected women’s suffrage
  • 1967: Zakir Husain was the first Muslim to be elected President of India
  • 1968: A street battle between students and troops in Paris occurred leaving 1,000 people injured as part of the May 68 period of civil unrest and workers strikes
  • 1968: Spain closed its border with Gibraltar except to Spaniards
  • 1975: 3 people died in tornado that struck Omaha, Nebraska
  • 1976: An earthquake struck Friuli in Northern Italy and caused nearly 1000 deaths and the destruction of entire villages
  • 1981: US expelled Libyan diplomats
  • 1986: Donald E Pelotte became the first Native American Catholic bishop
  • 1994: The US House of Representatives passed the Federal Assault Weapons Ban
  • 1996: Guatemala’s leftist guerrillas signed a key accord with the Arzo government aimed at ending 35 years of civil war
  • 1997: The Bank of England was given independence from political control, the biggest change in the bank’s 300-year history
  • 2001: During a trip to Syria, Pope John Paul II became the first pope to enter a mosque
  • 2008: Chile’s Chaiten Volcano erupted forcing the evacuation of more than 4,500 people
  • 2013: 13 people were killed in clashes between Islamist protestors and Bangladeshi police in Dhaka, Bangladesh
  • 2013: 15 people were killed and 50 were injured after a bomb detonated at a political rally in Pakistan
  • 2013: The US Senate passed a bill enabling the taxation of online sales
  • 2017: France banned fashion models that were too thin and mandated labeling of digitally enhanced photos
  • 2019: Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah of Brunei announced a moratorium on the death penalty for gay sex and adultery after worldwide condemnation of new Sharia laws
  • 2019: French telecom company Orange, its former CEO, and other executives went on trial in France for psychological harassment of their staff that unions claim resulted in 19 suicides and 12 other attempts
  • 2019: A major new UN report said one million plant and animal species are now at risk of extinction
  • 2020: The UK became the first European country to report over 30,000 confirmed cases of COVID-19
  • 2020: An Irish organization repaid a 170 year old favor, raising over millions of dollars for the Navajo Nation and Hopi Reservation badly affected by COVID-19. In 1840s, the Choctaw Nation had sent $170 to aid during the Irish potato famine
  • 2020: According to the International Council of Nurses, at least 90,000 healthcare workers worldwide had been infected by COVID-19 and more than 260 nurses had died
