On This Day

  • World Day of Bullying Prevention aka Blue Shirt Day
  • Day of Unity
  • 1712: The city of Utrecht banished poor Jews
  • 1922: Austria gains its independence
  • 1963: Hurricane Flora formed. Over the next few days it would kill 6,000 people in Cuba and Haiti
  • 1963: Gambia achieves full internal self-government
  • 1964: Hurricane Hilda formed. It killed 38 people in Louisiana, Mississippi, and Georgia
  • 1966: Lesotho (Basutoland) gained independence from Great Britain
  • 1994: A 7.9 earthquake struck Koerilen along with flooding, and at least 18 people were killed
  • 2006: Internet activist Julian Assange launched WikiLeaks
  • 2012: 19 people were killed after being buried by a landslide in Yunnan, China
