On This Day

  • Do Something Nice Day
  • National Storytelling Day
  • 1450: Jews were expelled from Lower Bavaria by the order of Ludwig IX
  • 1465: French King Louis XI signed a peace treaty with Charles the Stout
  • 1789: During the French Revolution the women of Paris marched to Versailles to confront Louis XVI about his refusal to promulgate the decrees on the abolition of feudalism, demand bread, and have the King and his court moved to Paris
  • 1793: Christianity was disestablished in France as part of the French Revolution
  • 1869: A strong hurricane known as the Saxby Gale devastated the Bay of Fundy region in Maritime Canada. Incredibly British naval officer Stephen Martin Saxby is said to have predicted the storm 10 months earlier in December 1868 via astronomy
  • 1877: Chief Joseph surrendered ending the Nez Perce War
  • 1908: Bulgaria declared independence from Turkey and Ferdinand I became Tsar
  • 1910: The Portuguese overthrew their monarchy and proclaimed a republic
  • 1942: 5,000 Jews of Dubno, Russia were massacred
  • 1942: During the Budy Massacre at an Auschwitz sub-camp, 90 French-Jewish women were beaten to death by guards
  • 1954: Hurricane Hazel formed in the Caribbean. It would kill 400-1000 people in the Bahamas and Haiti
  • 1968: A civil rights march in Derry was stopped by the Royal Ulster Constabulary (RUC) which resulted in clashes and further led to two days of serious rioting. This is often considered the start of ‘the Troubles’ in Northern Ireland
  • 1988: Israel banned Meir Kahane’s Kach Party on grounds of racism
  • 2000: Mass demonstrations in Belgrade, called the Bulldozer Revolution, led to the resignation of Slobodan MiloÅ¡ević
  • 2012: Anglo Platinum Limited fired 12,000 striking workers in South Africa
  • 2015: Flooding in South Carolina from a “1,000-year storm” resulted in 12 people dying and 9 dams failing
  • 2015: Governor of California Jerry Brown signed a bill giving terminally ill patients the “right to die”
  • 2018: The Nobel Peace Prize was awarded jointly to Congolese gynaecologist Denis Mukwege and Yazidi activist Nadia Murad for “efforts to end the use of sexual violence as a weapon of war”
  • 2020: India’s COVID-19 death toll passed100,000, with 6.6 million known cases, the third highest death toll in the world behind the US and Brazil
  • 2020: The World Health Organization (WHO) estimated 10% of world’s population may have been infected with COVID-19, more than 20 times the number of confirmed cases
