On This Day

  • Mulitcultural Diversity Day
  • 1622: French King Louis XIII and the Huguenots signed the Treaty of Montpellier
  • 1672: Poland and Turkey signed the Peace of Buczacz
  • 1685: French King Louis XIV revoked the Edict of Nantes cancelling the rights of French Protestants
  • 1748: The Treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle was signed, ending the War of Austrian Succession
  • 1860: The Second Opium War ended at the Convention of Peking with the ratification of the lopsided Treaty of Tientsin
  • 1878: Anti-socialist laws were ratified in Germany
  • 1901: Belgium’s Louise of den Plas began her activities working towards women’s rights
  • 1918: Czechoslovakia declared independence from the Austro-Hungarian Empire
  • 1929: Canadian law recognized women as “Persons”
  • 1954: Hurricane Hazel became the most severe to ever hit the US, killing 195 people in the US and Canada
  • 1992: A 6.6 earthquake hit Colombia with no fatalities
