  • National Day of Encouragement
  • Racial Justice Sunday
  • Sustainable House Day
  • 1635: Sweden and Poland signed the ceasefire Treaty of Stuhmsdorf
  • 1751: Amsterdam refused to allow the establishment of a Jewish ghetto
  • 1829: The Greek War of Independence ended after 8 years and 6 months
  • 1928: A hurricane hit Florida and killed 6,000 people between this date and the 17th
  • 1956: Black students were barred entry to a Clay County, Kentucky elementary school
  • 1958: The US Supreme Court ordered the all-white Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas to integrate
  • 1965: Hurricane Betsy struck Florida and Louisiana, killing 75 people
  • 1979: Hurricane Frederick hit Mobile, Alabama killing 5 people and causing $23 million in damage
  • 1979: Indonesia was hit with an 8.1 earthquake
  • 1988: Gilbert, by some measure the strongest hurricane ever (160 mph), devastated Jamaica
  • 1992: Hurricane Inuki pounded Hawaii
  • 2005: The bodies of more than 40 patients were discovered in a flooded hospital in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina
