  • 1609: An expulsion order against the Moriscos of Valencia was announced. It was the beginning of the expulsion of all Spain’s Moriscos
  • 1649: Oliver Cromwell killed 3000 royalists in the Massacre of Drogheda, Ireland
  • 1802: France annexed the Kingdom of Piedmont
  • 1857: In the Mountain Meadows Massacre, Mormons dressed as Indians murdered 120 colonists in Utah
  • 1881: Triple landslides buried Elm, Switzerland
  • 1893: The First Conference of the World Parliament of Religions was held in Chicago, and Indian monk Swami Vivekananda gave an influential speech
  • 1906: Mahatma Gandhi coined the term “Satyagraha” to characterize the Non-Violence movement in South Africa

  • 1992: Hurricane Iniki hit Kauai Hawaii, killing 3 people and injuring 8,000 more
  • 1997: After a nationwide referendum, Scotland voted to establish a devolved parliament within the United Kingdom
  • 2017: One million people marched in support of independence for Catalonia
  • 2017: Hurricane Irma left 7 million US homes without power in Florida and Georgia
