Many days there are far too many anniversaries, holidays, and observances to post about individually on social media, so in an effort to have more of them available, LLPHP is going to experiment with posting them daily. On This Day

  • Positive Thinking Day
  • 1922: The Straw Hat Riot began in New York City as people protested the right to wear straw hats beyond the accepted end date of September 15
  • 1944: A Great Atlantic Hurricane reached a peak intensity as a Category 4 storm and went on to kill 300-400 people along the US East Coast
  • 1975: Hurricane Eloise, killed 71 in the Caribbean and US from this date to the 27th of September
  • 1979: South Africa granted Venda independence (Not recognized out of South Africa)
  • 1988: Gilbert was the strongest hurricane in the Western Hemisphere by barometric reading (26.13)
  • 2008: Hurricane Ike made landfall on the Texas Gulf Coast, causing heavy damage to Galveston Island, Houston, and the surrounding areas
  • 2012: 33,000 people were evacuated after Guatemala’s Volcano of Fire erupted
  • 2013: 9 people were killed after massive floods in Galati County, Romania
  • 2015: Governor of California Jerry Brown declared a State of Emergency after wildfires devastated Lake and Napa counties
  • 2017: Nursing home inhabitants were rescued after losing their air-conditioning in the aftermath of Hurricane Irma in Hollywood, Florida, but not before 11 people died
