• 1349: 700 Jews of Basel Switzerland were burned alive inside their houses
• 1558: Geneva became independent from Berne canton, Switzerland
• 1570: Tsar Ivan the Terrible killed 1,000-2,000 residents of Novgorod
• 1792: Russia and Turkey signed the Peace of Jassy
• 1799: British Prime Minister William Pitt the Younger introduced an income tax to raise funds for the war against Napoleon
• 1857: A 7.9 earthquake shook Fort Tejon, California
• 1880: 6′ (1.83 m) of snow fell in Seattle in 5 days
• 1880: The Great Gale of 1880 devastated parts of Oregon and Washington with high winds and heavy snow
• 1923: The Swaraj political party was founded in India
• 1941: 6,000 Jews were murdered in a pogrom in Bucharest, Romania
• 1972: British coal miners began a national strike, the first in half a century
• 1979: The US Supreme Court struck down a Pennsylvania law requiring doctors performing an abortion to try to preserve the lives of potentially viable fetuses
• 1982: A 5.9 earthquake struck New England and Canada
• 1990: The US Supreme Court struck down Dallas’ ordinance imposing strict zoning on sexually oriented businesses
• 2005: The signing of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement, commonly known as the Naivasha Agreement, between the Government of Sudan and the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement rebel group was signed
• 2018: The first same-sex marriages took place in Australia a month after legalizing legislation was passed
• 2018: Mudslides on land stripped bare by recent fires swept away 100 houses in Montecito, California, killing at least 20 people
