On This Day

  • 1868: Opelousas Massacre at St Landry Parish Louisiana (200 blacks killed)
  • 1887: China’s Yellow River flooded killing between 900,000 and 2 million people, in one of the deadliest natural disasters in history
  • 1926: Russia and Latvia signed a treaty of neutrality
  • 1928: The UK passed the Dangerous Drugs Act outlawing cannabis
  • 1931: 200,000 demonstrators demanded a declaration of war on Japan in Peking
  • 1939: The German-Soviet Frontier Treaty was signed by Joachim von Ribbentrop and Vyacheslav Molotov, redrawing the German and Soviet spheres of influence in central Europe and transferring most of Lithuania to the USSR
  • 1958: Guinea voteed for independence from France
  • 1965: The Taal Volcano on Luzon Island in the Philippines erupted, killing around 100 people
  • 1971: The UK passed the Misuse of Drugs Act banning the medicinal use of cannabis
  • 1972: Japan and Communist China agreed to re-establish diplomatic relations
  • 1975: The US Congress passed a bill authorizing admission of women to military academies
  • 2016: Hurricane Matthew formed near the Windward Islands. It would kill over 1000 people in Haiti, the Caribbean, and the US
  • 2018: A 7.5 earthquake near Sulawesi Island, Indonesia, set off a tsunami that hit the cities of Donggala and Palu, killing at least 1649 people
  • 2019: Hurricane Lorenzo set a record as the first category 5 storm to be recorded so far north and east
  • 2020: The COVID-19 recorded global death toll passed 1 million deaths with over 33 million known cases (Johns Hopkins)
