  • 1650: Henry Robinson of England, opened the first marriage bureau
  • 1678: France and Brandenburg signed peace treaty
  • 1785: The Chasidic Sect was excommunicated in Kraków, Poland
  • 1915: A hurricane claimed 275 lives in the Mississippi Delta
  • 1927: A tornado struck St Louis, Missouri causing 85 people’s deaths
  • 1941: The Nazi massacre at Babi Yar ravine (near Kiev), Ukraine began leading to the killing of 33,771 people, mostly Jews
  • 1962: US President John F Kennedy authorized the use of federal troops to integrate the University of Mississippi
  • 1971: A cyclone and tidal wave near the Bay of Bengal killed as many as 10,000 people
  • 1972: Japan and the People’s Republic of China began diplomatic relations
  • 1983: The US Congress invoked the War Powers Act for the first time
  • 1983: The US Congress authorized President Ronald Reagan to keep 1,600 US Marines in Lebanon
  • 1994: The US House voted to prohibit lobbyists buying meals and entertainment for members of Congress
  • 2003: Hurricane Juan made landfall in Nova Scotia
  • 2009: An 8.0 magnitude earthquake near the Samoan Islands caused a tsunami
