  • 1349: 900 Jews were burned alive in Strasbourg and a similar number were banned from the city after the Jews were blamed for the spread of the Black Death
  • 1670: Roman Catholic Emperor Leopold I ordered the Jews driven out of Vienna
  • 1766: Dutch governor Falck and King Keerthisiri Rajasinghe of Kandy signed the Treaty of Batticaloa
  • 1803: Chief Justice John Marshall declared that any act of US Congress that conflicts with the Constitution is void
  • 1870: Seraph Young became the first woman to legally vote in the United States, two days after the Utah legislature passed a law allowing women to vote
  • 1883: New Jersey legalized unions in the first state labor union legislation
  • 1920: The League of Women Voters formed in Chicago
  • 1936: The National Negro Congress organized in Chicago
  • 1950: The USSR and China signed a peace treaty
  • 1956: Indonesia withdrew from the Netherlands Indonesian Union
  • 1957: The Georgia State Senate unanimously approved Senator Leon Butts’ bill barring blacks from playing baseball with whites
  • 1966: Russian writers Andrei Sinyavsky and Joey Daniel were found guilty of anti-Soviet agitation and propaganda for publishing their satirical writings abroad
  • 1971: US President Richard Nixon installed a secret taping system in the White House
  • 1989: Supreme Leader of Iran, Ayatollah Khomeini, issued a fatwa calling for the death of Salman Rushdie and his publishers because of his novel “The Satanic Verses” and placing a bounty on his head
  • 1992: A cease fire in Somalia began
  • 2021: Guinea declared an Ebola epidemic after three deaths
