- 1878: A Great Flood hit New Zealand’s South Island
- 1919: A race riot occurred in Elaine, Arkansas
- 1941: Approximately 33,771 Jews were killed at the Babi Yar ravine (near Kiev) Ukraine by Nazi troops over two days
- 1942: The Nazi SS exterminated 3,500 Jews in Zelov Lodz, Poland in a 6 week period
- 1958: French Guinea became the independent republic Guinea
- 1960: West Germany signed a trade agreement with East Germany
- 1962: US President John F Kennedy sent 3,000 federal troops to Mississippi
- 1962: James Meredith registered for classes at University of Mississippi
- 1966: Botswana (formerly Bechuanaland) gained independence from Britain
- 1971: Ian Paisley and Desmond Boal launched the [Ulster] Democratic Unionist Party
- 1975: 5 people drowned in a flash flood in a sewer and water tunnel in Niagara Falls, New York
- 1981: The French Parliament voted to abolish the death penalty

- 1989: Senegambia separated back into Gambia and Senegal
- 1993: A 6.4 earthquake killed 28,000 people in Latur, India
- 2005: The Parliament of Catalonia passed the Project of New Catalan Statute of Autonomy, proclaiming “Catalonia is a nation”
