On This Day

• Innovation Day
• 1760: Native American hostages were killed at Fort Prince George, South Carolina
• 1838: Kentucky passed a law permitting women to attend school under certain conditions
• 1838: Hundreds of Voortrekkers along the Blaukraans River, Natal were killed by Zulu warriors in the Weenen Massacre
• 1917: A synagogue was allowed to open in Madrid for the first time in 425 years
• 1918: Lithuania declared independence from Russia and Germany
• 1927: The US restored diplomatic relations with Turkey
• 1942: Japanese soldiers massacred 22 Australian Army nurses and 60 Australian and British soldiers and crew members from two sunken ships on Bangka Island leaving only one nurse and two soldiers that survived
• 1943: The “White Rose” student group posted a protest sign on a Munich facade reading “Out with Hitler! Long live freedom!” They were caught on February 18, and beheaded on February 22
• 1968: The first “911” emergency phone system in the US went into service in Haleyville, Alabama
• 1983: The Ash Wednesday bushfires in Victoria and South Australia claimed the lives of 75 people in one of Australia’s worst ever fires
• 1991: Dutch PPR, Political Party Radicals, disbanded
• 1994: A 6.5 earthquake struck South East Sumatra killing 200 people
• 2018: A National State of Emergency was declared in Ethiopia in the wake of anti-government protests
• 2019: Pope Francis defrocked ex-cardinal and archbishop of Washington Theodore McCarrick for sexually abusing minors and adults making him the first Cardinal to be removed for sexual abuse
• 2021: A US Winter storm continued with Dallas, Texas having its lowest temperature in 70 years
• 2021: Athens and parts of Greece were covered in an unusual heavy snowfall
