Pride Month During Social Distancing And Civil Unrest

| |

Things seem crazy right now. Between civil unrest following the killing of George Floyd and the COVID-19 Coronavirus, this year has not even been close to normal. With everything else going on, Pride Month shouldn’t be overshadowed. We can even celebrate and support Pride Month during social distancing and civil unrest.

Here are some ways you can celebrate and support Pride Month at a distance:

  • Wear clothing and jewellery showing your support. Whether it includes rainbows or quotes of support, what you wear makes a statement
  • Attend or host an online discussion, seminar, or forum about Gender and Sexual Minority (GSM) issues, experiences, and support
  • Donate to, or start a fundraiser for organisations that support the GSM community. Some of the organisations you may want to consider are The Transgender Law Center, The It Gets Better Project, PFLAG, and The Trevor Project. These are just a few ideas and there are many worthy organisations out there
  • Support GSM artists and culture. Like all groups, the GSM community has it’s own culture and many artists and musicians
  • Educate yourself through researching GSM history, issues, and experiences. Better yet, discuss these with GSM friends and family! This will help them know they are understood and valued, and help you understand them better
  • Decorate your house or car with GSM themed decorations

It’s important to support those we care about. We are all one human family. Whether you are part of the GSM community because of your identity, or because you are an ally, it is possible to celebrate Pride Month even during social distancing and civil unrest.
