- 1810: The Governors of Caracas declared independence from Spain
- 1920: Tornadoes killed 219 in Alabama and Mississippi
- 1971: US Supreme Court upheld the use of busing to achieve racial desegregation
- 1980: Cuban President Fidel Castro announced he was opening the Mariel Port for Cubans to leave. About 125,00 people left in the next 5-6 months
- 1998: The German terrorist group Red Army Faction announced their dissolution after 28 years
- 2013: 193 people were killed and 11,826 were injured after a magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck Lushan County, China
- 2013: 5 snowboarders were killed by an avalanche in Loveland Pass, Colorado
