On This Day

  • Oklahoma City Bombing Commemoration Day
  • 1529: The Second Diet of Speyer sought to halt reforms amongst the Catholic Church and the offshoots beginning to form, but instead gave rise to Protestantism
  • 1775: The American Revolution began in Lexington, Massachusetts with the “Shot Heard Round the World” taking place in Concord later that day
  • 1904: Much of Toronto, Canada was destroyed by fire
  • 1923: New Egyptian law allowed voting rights for most men, except soldiers
  • 1933: President Franklin Delano Roosevelt announced the US would leave the gold standard
  • 1939: Connecticut finally approved the Bill of Rights (148 years late)
  • 1943: Jews refused to surrender the Warsaw Ghetto to SS officer Jürgen Stroop, who then ordered its destruction, beginning the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising
  • 1993: After a 51 day siege by the FBI 76 Branch Davidians died in a fire near Waco, Texas
  • 1993: Fire in a psychiatric institute in South Korea, killed 40
  • 1994: The US Supreme Court prohibited excluding people from juries because of their gender
  • 1995: The Oklahoma City bombing: Timothy McVeigh detonated a truck bomb at the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building killing 168 and injuring 500
