On This Day

  • Simplicity Day
  • 1790: During the French Revolution, the Civil Constitution of the Clergy was adopted, which put the Catholic Church in France under the control of the state
  • 1878: A fever epidemic began in New Orleans that would kill 4,500 people
  • 1902: The Australian Parliament agreed to female suffrage
  • 1909: The 16th Amendment to the US Constitution, regarding the income tax was passed by Congress
  • 1913: 150,000 Ulstermen gathered and resolved to resist Irish Home Rule by force of arms despite British Liberals’ promise of Irish Home Rule
  • 1917: The Bisbee Deportation occurred as vigilantes kidnapped and deported nearly 1,300 striking miners and others from Bisbee, Arizona
  • 1920: Lithuania and the USSR signed a peace treaty and Lithuania became an independent republic
  • 1933: The US Congress passed its first minimum wage law
  • 1960: Congo, Chad and Central African Republic declared independence
  • 1967: During a race riot in Newark, New Jersey, 26 people were killed, 1,500 people were injured, and over 1,000 people were arrested
  • 1967: The Greek regime deprived 480 Greeks of their citizenship
  • 1972: Twelve years after the ANC and Pan Africanist Congress were banned, a new political movement, the Black People Convention was formed after a three day long conference in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa
  • 1975: Sao Tomé e Príncipe gained independence from Portugal
  • 1979: Kiribati (formerly the Gilbert Islands) declared independence from the UK
  • 1993: 160 people were killed when a 7.8 earthquake hit Hokkaido, Japan
  • 2012: 200 people were killed by the Syrian army in Tremseh
