Many days there are far too many anniversaries, holidays, and observances to post about individually on social media, so in an effort to have more of them available, LLPHP is going to experiment with posting them daily. Please note all holidays and observances listed as “National” days are American holidays and observances unless it is stated otherwise.

On This Day

  • 1253: Jews were expelled from Vienne, France by order of Pope Innocent IV
  • 1298: During the Rindfleisch Persecutions, the Jewish community in Wurzburg, Germany was massacred
  • 1900: The First Pan-African Congress met in London where a plea was made for African self-government
  • 1906: Pogroms were carried out against Jews in Odessa, Russia
  • 1913: Arabs attacked the Jewish community of Rechovot
  • 1929: The Fascist government in Italy banned the use of foreign words
  • 1930: An earthquake struck Ariano, Italy and 1,500 people were killed
  • 1967: Race riots began in Detroit. Over the next few days, 43 people died, 2000 people were injured and 442 fires were set
  • 1968: During a race riot in Cleveland, 11people were killed
  • 1970: The Stormont Government (Northern Ireland) announced a ban on parades and public processions until January 1971
  • 2019: At least 36 people were killed by a mud landslide in Shuicheng county, Guizhou province, China
