- 1616: Nicolaus Copernicus’ astronomical work ‘de Revolutionibus’ was placed on the Catholic Forbidden Index
- 1623: The first American temperance law was enacted in Virginia
- 1770: In the Boston Massacre aka the Incident on King Street, British soldiers killed 5 men in a crowd throwing snowballs, stones, and sticks at them. African American Crispus Attucks was the first to die and was later held up as an early black martyr. The Massacre galvanized anti-British feelings
- 1783: King Stanislaus Augustus Poniatowski granted rights to the Jews of Kovno
- 1820: The Dutch city of Leeuwarden forbid Jews to go to synagogues on Sundays
- 1856: Georgia became the first state to regulate railroads
- 1907: The second Duma opened in St. Petersburg, Russia and 40,000 demonstrators had to be dispersed by Russian troops
- 1943: Anti-fascist strikes took place in Italy
- 1949: The Jharkhand Party was founded in India
- 1964: An emergency crisis was proclaimed in Ceylon due to social unrest
- 1970: The Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty went into effect
- 2005: The Burkinabé Party for Democracy and Socialism held its first National Convention
- 2012: Tropical Storm Irina killed 65 people in Madagascar
