- Day of Remembrance of the Victims of the Rwanda Genocide

- National Day of Hope
- World Health Day

- 1891: Nebraska introduced an 8 hour work day
- 1922: US President Warren G. Harding’s Interior Secretary, Albert B. Fall, leased the Teapot Dome oil reserves to Harry Sinclair, setting in motion the Teapot Dome Scandal
- 1926: In San Luis Obispo, California, forest fires burned 900 acres and killed 2
- 1946: Syria’s independence from France was officially recognised
- 1954: US President Dwight D. Eisenhower first voiced fear of a “domino-effect” of communism in China and South East Asia
- 1969: The US Supreme Court struck down laws prohibiting private possession of obscene material
- 1994: The Rwandan Genocide began: the Presidential Guard began killing moderate politicians and public figures in Kigali, including Prime Minister Agathe Uwilingiyimana. A total of 800,000 were killed
