  • Memento Mori “Remember You Die” Day
  • National Write To Congress Day
  • 1750: A tax revolt occurred in Haarlem, Netherlands
  • 1910: British miners staged a strike for an 8 hour working day
  • 1911: The Russian Turkestan city of Almaty was destroyed by a magnitude 7.7 earthquake
  • 1921: Turkey made peace with Armenia
  • 1933: Minnie D. Craig became the first female elected as Speaker of the North Dakota House of Representatives, and the first female to hold a Speaker position anywhere in the United States
  • 1947: The opening session of Congress was televised for the first time
  • 1947: William Dawson became the first African American to head a Congressional Committee
  • 1987: Aretha Franklin became the first female artist to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame
  • 1993: US President George H.W Bush and Russian President Boris Yeltsin signed the START II Arms Reduction Treaty
  • 2018: Landslides and flooding caused by heavy rains in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo, killed at least 37 people
