  • 1349: Jews who survived a massacre in Constance, Germany were burned to death
  • 1785: Prussia signed a trade agreement with the US
  • 1897: In the Lattimer Massacre, a sheriff’s posse killed twenty unarmed immigrant miners in Pennsylvania
  • 1899: A second major quake in 7 days, registering as a magnitude 8.6 hit Yakutat Bay, Alaska
  • 1967: Gibraltar voted 12,138 to 44 to remain British and not Spanish
  • 1974: Portugal recognized the independence of Republic of Guinea-Bissau
  • 1988: Hurricane Gilbert, between now and the 18th, killed 300 in Jamaica, Texas, and the Yucatan
  • 2012: Teachers in Chicago went on strike effecting 350,000 students
  • 2012: 10,000 miners demonstrated at the Lonmin mines in Marikana, South Africa
  • 2012: 29 people were killed by floods and heavy rain in Vietnam
  • 2015: Floods and landslides in Northeastern Japan, forced 90,000 people to evacuate their homes
  • 2017: Hurricane Irma made landfall in the Florida Keys as a category 3 hurricane
  • 2018: South Carolina issued a mandatory evacuation order affecting one million people ahead of Hurricane Florence
  • 2019: Malaysia’s National Disaster Management Agency delivered half a million face masks to Sarawak State, after more than 930,000 hectares (about 2.3 million acres) burnt in Indonesia causing hazardous levels of air pollution
  • 2020: Wildfires in Oregon caused 500,000 people (10% of the state’s population) to evacuate, with an unprecedented 900,000 acres burnt
  • 2020: California’s August Complex wildfire became the largest recorded in state history at 471,000 acres (736 square miles)
