- Holocaust Remembrance Day aka Yom HaShoah (Evening of April 8, 2021 to Evening of April 9, 2021)
- Buddha Day
- 1766: The first fire escape was patented. It was a wicker basket on a pulley and chain
- 1913: The 17th Amendment to the United States Constitution was ratified by Congress, providing for direct election of Senators by popular vote
- 1916: Norway approved female suffrage
- 1943: US President Franklin D Roosevelt, in an attempt to check inflation, froze wages and prices, prohibited workers from changing jobs unless the war effort would be aided thereby, and barred rate increases to common carriers and public utilities
- 1952: US President Harry Truman seized steel mills to avert a strike
- 1960: The US Senate passed a major Civil Rights Bill with measures against discriminatory voting practices
