On This Day
- National Science Day
- In 1871, the Second Enforcement Act gave the federal government control of Congressional elections in the US
- In 1909, the first National Woman’s Day was observed in the United States. It was organized by the Socialist Party of America in honor of the 1908 garment workers’ strike in New York, where women protested against working conditions
- In 1933, on Adolf Hitler’s advice, German President Paul von Hindenburg signed the Reichstag Fire Decree after the building was destroyed by fire in Berlin; this decree eliminated many civil liberties in Germany
- In 1944, the ten-Boom family was arrested in Nazi occupied Netherlands (Haarlem) on charges of hiding Jews
- In 1947, an anti-government uprising in Taiwan, known as the February 28 Massacre, was violently put down by Chiang Kai-shek and his Kuomintang-led Republic of China government with the loss of 18,000-28,000 lives. The massacre marked the beginning of the White Terror
- In 2001, the Nisqually Earthquake measuring 6.8 on the Richter Scale hit the Nisqually Valley and the Seattle, Tacoma, and Olympia area of Washington state
