On This Day

  • 1852: The Dutch government recognized the right of Catholics to organize
  • 1876: Race rioting in Cainhoy, South Carolina resulted in the deaths of 6 people
  • 1905: The Partition of Bengal (India) occurred
  • 1925: The negotiations for the Locarno Treaties were finished
  • 1942: A cyclone in the Bay of Bengal killed about 40,000 people south of Calcutta, India
  • 1943: An Anti-Jewish riot occurred in Rome
  • 1984 Desmond Tutu, South African Anglican Archbishop, won the Nobel Peace Prize for “his role as a unifying leader-figure in the campaign to resolve the problem of apartheid in South Africa”
  • 1987: In the Great Storm of 1987, 175-kph hurricane force winds hit London and much of the South of England killing 23 people and causing widespread blackouts
  • 1993: An Anti-Nazi riot broke out in Welling, Kent, after police stopped protesters approaching the British National Party headquarters
  • 2013: 18 people were killed after Typhoon Wipha hit Japan
  • 2017: A storm formed from Hurricane Ophelia hit Ireland, killing 3 people
